Portugal is the 9th safest country of the world

According to a ranking of 121 nations with regard to their relative peacefulness prepared by the British magazine The Economist, Portugal was considered to be the ninth safest country in the world.
The "Global Peace Index" points out that the criminal activity within the national territory in 2006 is "almost ridiculous", revealing that out of the ten safer countries of the world seven are European.
The first place of the world list is occupied by Norway, followed by New Zealand, Denmark, Ireland, Japan, Finland, Sweden, Canada, Portugal and Austria.
