These results compared and adjusted to the ones of the previous edition (in which only 125 countries were evaluated) show that Portugal has improved by 5 positions in the global and 2 in the EU context, having left behind Slovakia and Hungary.
The GCI takes into account the level of overall development of countries and includes economic, institutional, educational and business variables, in order to define their competitiveness.
Portugal is considered as 8th best country in the world concerning the overall time required starting a business. Other criteria where Portugal has a better position than its global rank are: infrastructure quality (25), institutions (27), technological skills (31), health and initial qualification (32) and innovation ability (33).
The WEF's Global Competitiveness Report, in addition to the CGI, integrating another index, the Business Competitiveness Index Settlements (BIS) which focuses on productivity and competitiveness levels of businesses. In this index, Portugal occupies 30th position in a list of 127 countries and the 13th in the context of the European Union.
